Pune Extends Property Tax Discount Deadline to July 7

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has extended the deadline for property tax payments at discounted rates to July 7, an extension from the original June 30 deadline.

According to PMC officials, citizen facilitation centers (CFCs) are available for residents to pay taxes in person. “We have also launched an online payment facility for taxpayer convenience. Property owners are encouraged to pay their taxes on time to avoid last-minute congestion,” stated Avinash Sapkal, head of the property tax department.

The PMC offers property owners a 5-10% discount if taxes are paid by May 31. This year, due to delays in bill distribution, an additional month was granted for discounted payments, followed by another week of extension.

However, many property taxpayers have reported issues with the official website. Activists are advocating for further extensions due to ongoing challenges in bill distribution. They argue that the disruptions warrant additional time for payments at discounted rates.

“The PMC requires taxpayers to fill out PT3 forms to qualify for discounts. However, despite completing this process, numerous taxpayers are encountering approval complications. Additional time for resolution is essential,” remarked Ujwal Keskar from Aaple Pune, a citizens’ group.

As of June 30, the PMC collected approximately Rs 1,244.50 crore from 7.10 lakh properties that paid taxes between April 1 and June 30 this year. Civic officials have noted a decrease in overall revenue for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025-26 compared to 2024-25, with PMC receiving around Rs 100 crore less than the previous year’s collection of Rs 1,350 crore until the same date.

Issues with Merged Areas

The slowdown in property tax recovery from merged areas has negatively affected overall revenue. Local residents have long called for a reduction in property tax rates following the merger.

The state government has mandated that the property tax for these areas not exceed double the amount previously paid while they were part of the gram panchayat. However, PMC officials indicate that clarity on rateable values and formulas for charging rates per the state’s directives is lacking.

The PMC may introduce an amnesty scheme for these merged areas, according to officials.
