Puducherry Launches Housing Subsidy for Poor: CM

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N Rangasamy has announced that his government is rolling out a housing subsidy scheme aimed at providing solid homes for the underprivileged by replacing makeshift huts.

During a function in Tirukanchi village on Thursday, where he distributed increased pensions to the elderly, destitute women, and marginalized citizens, he stated, “The integrated housing scheme, which combines subsidies from our territorial government with the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, has been initiated to support the poor in transitioning from huts to concrete houses.”

Rangasamy expressed confidence that the Union Territory would become “hut-free” by swiftly implementing this housing scheme.

The Chief Minister asserted his administration’s commitment to fulfilling all promises made in the Assembly, criticizing the previous Congress-DMK coalition for neglecting the welfare of the populace. “The former government ignored the needs of the poor. The then Chief Minister V Narayanasamy was preoccupied with disputes with the Lieutenant Governor, leaving citizens in distress,” he remarked, noting the absence of social welfare initiatives during that time.

He emphasized that his government is now providing various welfare benefits to the needy. The monthly pension for seniors has been increased by Rs 500, while similar enhancements have been made for destitute women and widows.

Rangasamy outlined several initiatives from the Social Welfare Department and the Department of Women and Child Development aimed at supporting the vulnerable. “Were such programs ever implemented during the previous Congress-DMK government?” he challenged.

Furthermore, he announced plans to establish an industrial estate on a sprawling 750-acre site to foster industrial growth and create job opportunities for technically skilled youth. “We aim to lay the foundation for this industrial estate on either February 12 or 22,” he said.

Agriculture Minister C Jayakumar, Speaker R Selvam, various legislators, and officials were also present at the event.
