NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu announced on Wednesday that the government has built four crore pucca houses for the underprivileged over the past decade, reflecting its commitment to achieving housing for all.
In her joint address to Parliament, she noted that 32 lakh newly constructed houses were handed over to beneficiaries in the last year.
Emphasizing efforts to boost urban livelihoods, the president shared that under the PM SVANidhi scheme, 72 lakh street vendors received financial aid totaling Rs 16,000 crore.
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs oversees this initiative, introduced in 2020 to provide affordable working capital loans to street vendors significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheme offers loans in three stages: the first tranche of Rs 10,000, the second tranche of Rs 20,000 upon repayment of the first, and a third tranche of Rs 50,000 upon repayment of the second loan.
