GHAZIABAD: In two months, beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)-urban units — who have been waiting for a roof over their heads for the last five years — may get their homes. Decks have been cleared for early possession of 3,496 units, which had been announced seven years ago. Beneficiaries were supposed to get the flats by 2020.
Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) will spend about Rs 18 crore from to carry out development work in all its colonies where units under the central govt’s flagship housing scheme have been constructed.
GDA secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said, “In about two months, we will be in a position to hand over units under PMAY (urban) to eligible beneficiaries.” PMAY was launched to provide affordable housing to people from economically disadvantaged sections.
“On our end, most of the flats are ready. The GDA board vetted a proposal under which the development authority will spend about Rs 18 crore from under the shelter fee head, get the work completed and hand over units to beneficiaries,” Singh said.
“GDA has already constructed 3,496 units under the said scheme, but due to a lack of external development by other agencies like PWD, UP Jal Nigam and the power department, the possession of flats has been delayed,” the GDA secretary said.
In the Madhuban Bapudham housing scheme, GDA has constructed 856 units which are ready, but UP Jal Nigam has not developed water infrastructure. In Dasna, 432 flats are ready, but water and sewer infrastructure have not been laid yet. Pratap Vihar has 1,200 units ready under the scheme but water supply is an issue due to which possession could not be given.
