BHUBANESWAR: The state government has successfully constructed 136,000 houses for urban poor citizens under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) across 115 urban local bodies over the past decade since 2015, according to the Odisha Urban Housing Mission (OUHM).
Data indicates that a total of 184,000 houses were sanctioned under PMAY-U, with 162,000 already initiated, achieving 73% of the state’s target for housing. This housing data is essential for the Odisha Economic Survey Report 2025-26.
In terms of specific scheme components, beneficiary-led construction accounts for the highest number, with 131,000 houses completed. Additionally, 3,650 houses were finished under the affordable housing project, and 1,520 units have been completed through in-situ slum redevelopment.
“Beneficiaries receive financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for constructing new all-weather pucca houses, which include essential amenities like water supply, toilets, electricity, and sanitation. Assistance is available for homes ranging from 21 to 30 sqm,” the report states.
To date, ₹2,976.70 crore has been allocated under the beneficiary-led construction scheme, with ₹39.55 crore given as incentives for early house completion. Grants are provided to beneficiaries for reconstructing their residences.
Beneficiaries of affordable housing are chosen through a transparent process based on their annual income, with individual contributions of ₹1.5 lakh, while the government funds the remaining amount.
The in-situ slum redevelopment project involves relocating slum residents to transit housing while permanent pucca houses are being constructed at designated sites.
“PMAY is a transformative initiative for the urban poor. People living in slums lack basic necessities. Owning a house is often just a dream for them, and this scheme helps make that dream a reality,” said social worker Alok Kar.
