NOIDA: Approximately 250 housekeeping staff and security guards at Supertech Ecovillage-1 in Greater Noida West began a strike on Tuesday morning, leaving over 20,000 residents facing issues related to sanitation and safety.
The protest commenced around 8 AM, driven by claims from workers that they had not received their salaries for two months from the outgoing maintenance agency, Gravity.
Agitated workers blocked all three gates of the society at the start of the protest. While two gates were reopened after an hour, the main entry, Gate No. 1, remained closed until the afternoon, causing residents to take longer routes to enter or exit the condominium. The society lacked security for nearly three hours, and garbage collection was halted.
“There was no one to manage security or cleaning. Children going to school were delayed because only two gates were open,” said Manish Kumar, a resident.
Supertech Ecovillage-1 comprises about 4,800 flats. This strike occurred shortly after residents had blocked a road on August 10 due to water shortages, resulting in the builder replacing Gravity with a new agency, YG Estate. However, the workers assert that the outgoing agency left without settling the outstanding wages. “We have rents to pay. If salaries don’t come, we’ll end up homeless,” expressed a security guard.
Residents noted that the conflict between the builder and the agencies has placed them in a difficult position. Police intervened around noon, and after receiving assurances that pending salaries would be addressed, the protest was called off. The main gate reopened by 2 PM.
Representatives from Supertech Ltd declined to comment.
