KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court (HC) announced on Thursday that construction work at the Chingrighata crossing for the Orange Line project can proceed without further issues. This decision came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Upamanyu Bhattacharya, which sought urgent court intervention in response to delays in completing the 32km New Garia-Airport metro corridor.
The project had been delayed since February 2 due to the lack of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Kolkata Police necessary for cordoning off a section of the busy EM Bypass crossing.
State Advocate General Kishore Datta informed the HC that a meeting on September 9, which included officials from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), Metro Railway, and Kolkata Police, resolved the issues delaying the Orange Line construction. The court reviewed the meeting’s minutes and expressed its satisfaction with the resolution.
The court noted that this resolution enables the initiation of construction for the final 366m viaduct of the Orange Line at Chingrighata. It emphasized that any future problems arising during the project should be reported to the court. The HC concluded that work could now proceed smoothly, with the state government scheduling two weekend nights—November 14-16 and November 21-23—for girder-launching activities at Chingrighata.
