NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has collected ₹650 crore in property taxes so far this financial year, with a marked increase in digital payments. The tax was paid by 182,894 out of 360,000 property owners, with 62% opting for digital methods, totaling ₹383 crore, while the remaining 38% paid ₹267 crore offline. NMMC facilitated payments via UPI, QR codes, debit/credit cards, net banking, NEFT/RTGS, and IMPS.
In its effort to achieve a target of ₹1,000 crore by March 31, NMMC has issued notices and seized properties from several defaulters. While some taxpayers reported issues with online payments, there has been a significant increase in digital adoption, allowing residents to pay taxes securely from home, according to NMMC commissioner Kailas Shinde. This year, the civic body also sent SMS and WhatsApp links to residents regarding outstanding taxes. The property tax department has taken action against all defaulters.
Officers from various divisions are now tasked with updating information about defaulters through strategic planning. So far, 77 properties have been seized, with plans to take similar actions against more defaulters in the near future, according to an official. NMMC has recovered approximately ₹39 crore in taxes. Additionally, 1,608 substantial arrears have been flagged with seizure warnings given seven days and 48 hours in advance. “Currently, we are focusing on seizing industrial properties, with intentions to include commercial and business properties soon,” an official stated.
NMMC highlighted the ongoing rise in digital tax payments while noting that some property owners still have substantial outstanding amounts. Shinde mentioned that names of those with significant arrears will be disclosed soon, emphasizing a stricter approach moving forward.
He added that ensuring necessary funding for city development is crucial, urging all property owners to meet their tax obligations promptly.
