Nashik issues notices to 450 property tax defaulters

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued notices to 450 defaulters, each with property tax dues exceeding Rs 1 lakh, instructing them to pay within 15 days.

This decision came after a directive from the municipal commissioner, Manisha Khatri, which aimed to identify major defaulters in each division and enhance recovery efforts.

For the current financial year (2025-26), the civic body targets a property tax collection of Rs 270 crore. However, as of February 10, the collection stands at only Rs 215 crore, indicating a shortfall of Rs 55 crore with just over a month and a half left to achieve the goal.

Comparatively, last year’s collection at this point was Rs 220 crore, highlighting a Rs 5 crore decrease this year.

Civic officials attribute this lag in collections to many NMC staff being involved in election duties over the previous three months, which affected recovery efforts. “With civic elections concluded, steps are now being taken to ramp up tax recovery as we approach the year’s end. Divisional officers have been told to implement all necessary actions to enhance collection from defaulters,” an official stated.

Currently, outstanding property tax arrears from the past five to six years have amassed to nearly Rs 500 crore. “Therefore, the focus is on recovering both the outstanding dues and the current year’s payments,” an official added.

With the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, officials emphasized the need for enhanced revenue mobilization, as the NMC must contribute 20% towards various infrastructure and development projects for this major religious event.
