Nashik City Issues Notices to 500 More Property Tax Defaulters

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued notices to an additional 500 property tax defaulters, each with outstanding dues exceeding Rs 1 lakh. They have been granted 21 days to settle their debts, after which warrants will be issued against them.

Recently, the property tax department sent notices to 450 defaulters, bringing the total number of notices issued in recent weeks to 950. According to regulations, the annual property tax must be paid by December 31; failure to do so results in a 2% penalty per month. Unfortunately, many taxpayers did not adhere to the deadline, prompting the civic body to take action.

NMC aimed for a property tax collection target of Rs 270 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year, but has only succeeded in collecting Rs 218 crore to date. The corporation now needs to recover Rs 52 crore within the next 40 days to meet its goal. Notably, this year’s collection is Rs 7 crore lower than during the same timeframe last year.

Officials have attributed the shortfall to staff being engaged in election duties for the past three months, which hindered tax recovery efforts. With elections concluded, personnel have returned to their departments and have resumed efforts to recover taxes by the end of the fiscal year.

To boost collections during this critical period, NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri convened a meeting with the property tax department and divisional officers from all six divisions, urging them to expedite the recovery process from defaulters.
