MUMBAI: The Elphinstone Bridge is back in the news as residents of a nearby chawl report harassment from Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) officials.
A resident from Haji Noorani Chawl mentioned that on Tuesday, BEST officials attempted to cut off the electricity supply and warned that water would also be discontinued.
“Today, BEST officials informed us that MHADA requested to disconnect electricity and water at Haji Noorani Chawl, stating that the building is unsafe. We gathered and prevented them from cutting off the supply,” said Munaf Thakur, Secretary and resident of the chawl. He noted that both Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and IT Minister Ashish Shelar assured residents that the situation would be addressed only after the completion of the cluster plan.
Residents from 19 buildings face eviction as their structures are slated for demolition to facilitate work on the Elphinstone Bridge, but they have refused to relocate.
