Morbi Ceramics Face ₹122 Crore Fine After NGTC Ruling

AHMEDABAD: The National Green Tribunal (West Zone) has dismissed appeals from 337 ceramic units in the Morbi and Wankaner region concerning the payment of ₹122.05 crore for environmental damage compensation (EDC) related to the use of banned coal gasifiers.

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) had prohibited the use of coal gasifiers following Supreme Court scrutiny. Ceramic units were allowed to operate under the condition that they switch to PNG. A committee report in 2024 assessed environmental damage at ₹122.05 crore, proposing an equitable distribution of the amount among the affected industries.

In May 2025, the GPCB directed payment of EDC from 606 ceramic units. Of these, 337 appealed to the NGT, claiming the GPCB’s order lacked proper notice and opportunity for a hearing. They also contested the penalty’s effective date as illegal.

After deliberation, the NGT’s Pune bench stated, “The total EDC amount has been ascertained for all defaulting industries and divided based on industry size—small, medium, and large. We affirm this distribution method, given the scale of the issue at hand.”

The tribunal concluded, “We find no faults in the challenged orders; thus, the appeals are dismissed.”
