Maharashtra’s Intra-District Property Registrations Top 60,000

PUNE: The state government’s initiative allowing citizens to register property at any sub-registrar office within their district has surpassed 60,000 registrations since its launch on May 1, officials reported on Tuesday.

However, plans for inter-district registration are unlikely to materialize until next year. “There are technical and legal challenges that need to be resolved before implementing this statewide system. Stakeholders have expressed concerns, and significant changes are required in the software. Therefore, it won’t be possible to roll it out before next year,” said a senior official from the state registration department.

A total of 60,694 documents have been processed under the intra-district system. Sharad More, a 38-year-old resident of Daund, was able to sell his agricultural land without extensive travel. “I completed my transaction at the Daund village sub-registrar office. The new system made everything easier and more convenient,” he said.

Likewise, Manisha Khade from Baramati finalized a sale deed at a Pune city office. “The option to register within the same district saved me several trips to Baramati and sped up the process,” she mentioned.

Officials from the registration department explained that individuals can now approach any sub-registrar office within their district for various documentation such as sales, gifts, leases, or mortgages. DIG IT, Abhay Mohite, noted that the initiative has started off well. “Surpassing 60,000 registrations in under four months reflects a strong public response. As awareness grows, we anticipate even higher engagement. The implementation has gone smoothly, without any significant technical issues reported,” he said.

The program was tested in Mumbai city and suburban offices before being expanded statewide. Officials reported that it is already alleviating congestion in high-traffic urban offices while reducing travel time.

The department is cautious about transitioning to the inter-district model. “This is a significant reform. It will allow property registration from anywhere in the state, but we must ensure legal, operational, and IT readiness before launching it,” an official stated.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a “One State, One Registration” system in April as part of the 100-day program, enabling property registration from any location within Maharashtra.
