Maharashtra CM to distribute 423 flats to police families

MUMBAI: Following the key handover at Worli BDD chawl flats, CM Devendra Fadnavis will distribute keys to 864 flats at the Naigaum BDD chawls in Dadar. This ceremony will take place at Shanmukhananda Hall on Wednesday, where five wings consisting of 22 storeys each have been completed.

Out of the 864 flats, 423 will be allocated to police families who have lived here as tenants for generations.

In total, there are 2,250 tenements owned by the Mumbai police commissioner, soon to be granted as ownership to the police families who have long resided there. Each police family will need to pay ₹15 lakh for a 500-square-foot flat.

Rekha More, a beneficiary from a police family, shared, “My family has been living here for nearly 80 years. We are overjoyed that we will finally have our own home. Moving from 160 sq ft to 500 sq ft is a dream we never thought we could afford in Mumbai. We have a month to arrange the ₹15 lakh, and we are ready to do so.”

During a recent review meeting, Fadnavis advocated for the BDD chawl to be designated as an essential project and established timelines for finalizing the developments at three sites. The completion deadline for the BDD Worli project is set for May 2029, for the Naigaum project by June 2029, and for the N M Joshi Marg project by June 2031.

At N M Joshi Marg, three wings have been finished, and 557 flats are nearing completion. Officials stated that only minor finishing touches remain, with the first phase expected to wrap up by late February to early March.
