MUMBAI: On Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the establishment of an effective system for affordable rental housing in Mumbai, along with the creation of a dedicated portal for public access.

Recognizing the influx of individuals moving to Mumbai for employment and entrepreneurship, Fadnavis emphasized the pressing need for housing, asserting that the government must ensure the availability of rental properties at reasonable prices.

He underscored the necessity for supply to meet demand and advocated for a coordinated approach to alleviate challenges faced by both landlords and tenants, as indicated in an official statement.

Fadnavis also stressed that all rental housing processes should adhere strictly to agreements and be monitored effectively by authorities.

In an effort to strengthen the enforcement of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999, he proposed that deputy police commissioners be assigned as competent authorities under the Act. A notification should be prepared to formalize these duties and expand the number of such authorities with the growth of police jurisdictions.

To expedite the resolution of rent-related disputes, Fadnavis called for the establishment of 100 special courts and the appointment of retired judges for this purpose.

He also recommended initiating evening courts, pending court approval, to address long-standing cases, even if it necessitates renting premises, as per the announcement.
