PUNE: The Phase-II expansion of the Metro system in and around Pune is set to gain momentum, as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans to enhance the transit infrastructure in several cities, including Mumbai and Nagpur. The proposed Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi line, along with new routes from Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor and from Hadapsar to Saswad Road, aims to connect older city areas with newer developments. If implemented on schedule, these lines will significantly benefit countless commuters.

Fadnavis stated that the state government is focused on expanding the Metro network and has approved the new lines in Pune and neighboring areas. Most of these newly proposed lines are expected to be executed by Maha Metro, with officials indicating that these proposals are at various stages of study and approval. An official noted, “We are currently working on the technical aspects of the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi line. This route is crucial as it covers major city areas and will play a vital role in daily commutes. The union government approved this line in November 2025, which will feature 28 stations along a 32 km route.”

Commuters, however, have expressed concerns regarding the slow pace of Metro construction. Sanjay Shitole, who has been closely observing the progress of these projects, urged the state government and Maha Metro to accelerate their efforts. “The project should be completed within three to four years after work begins. Delays will cause significant inconvenience for all,” he stated.

Arvind Kadam, a resident of Shivajinagar, suggested that the Chief Minister establish a committee to oversee the progress of the Metro works. “Only two Metro lines have been fully operational in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad over the past decade. While extensions are under construction, all other lines are still in the planning stages,” Kadam remarked.

Night landing facility for Baramati airport likely

Baramati is expected to gain a night landing facility alongside Latur, Amaravati, and Yevatmal. Sachin Satav, president of Baramati Municipal Council, mentioned that this has been a long-held aspiration of the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. “Numerous VIPs from the political, business, and industrial sectors travel to Baramati. Currently, only chartered flights and helicopters can land here. With the introduction of night landings, they can arrive and depart at their convenience, greatly enhancing transportation flexibility for them. This will significantly benefit the town’s industrial sector,” Satav added.
