KOLKATA: In an effort to facilitate the reconstruction of homes that collapsed during the tunneling incident in August 2019, two more houses in the Bowbazar metro collapse zone have been demolished. The recent demolition of 10B Durga Pituri Lane and 14B Sykrapara Lane was carried out by KMRC to eliminate steel beams that could hinder construction.

Approximately 23 new houses are set to be built in the vacant space at Durga Pituri Lane, with the reconstruction of three additional homes in progress nearby. This comes after the opening of the Green Line’s final segment by PM Modi on August 22.

The area designated for development is bordered by BB Ganguly Street to the north, Durga Pituri Lane to the east, Gour De Lane to the west, and Hidaram Banerjee Lane to the south. Prior to August 31, 2019, DP Lane consisted of century-old structures that collapsed when a TBM encountered an aquifer, resulting in significant subsidence and displacing over 700 residents. Additional subsidence events occurred in 2022 and 2023.

More than 50 houses have been restored, allowing families to return. However, 72 families remain temporarily housed in rentals provided by ITD ITD Cementation, and they will move back once the new structures are completed.
