BENGALURU: On Saturday, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara announced that authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Confident Group chairperson C J Roy, who reportedly committed suicide in his office while Income Tax officials were present.

Parameshwara shared with reporters that the Income Tax Department had previously conducted searches at Roy’s firm and was in the process of finalizing necessary protocols.

“Last December, there was a raid at his company. According to regulations, a charge sheet must be filed within 60 days in court. The need for finalization was urgent, and he was summoned before February 4,” he mentioned.

Roy had just returned from abroad and was compliant with the authorities during the investigation, the minister added.

“He returned from Dubai three days ago. The I-T officials visited his office to obtain his statement, and he was responsive,” Parameshwara noted.

“During the questioning, Roy indicated he would be back in five minutes but did not return after more than 20 minutes, leading to the discovery of his suicide,” he stated.

Parameshwara confirmed that he had requested a police investigation into the incident.

“I have instructed police officials to look into the circumstances surrounding the event. The truth will emerge only after the report concludes,” he said.

He further revealed that Roy’s family attributes the incident to Income Tax actions. “Roy’s brother has stated that this incident occurred because of the I-T raids. Our police haven’t examined it from that perspective yet,” he added.

When questioned about a potential political motive behind increasing Income Tax raids, the Home Minister refrained from speculating.

“As the Home Minister, I can’t comment beyond that,” he remarked.

Clarifying the investigation’s focus, Parameshwara elaborated, “The police will specifically investigate the suicide case. If further issues arise, they will be addressed accordingly.”

The real estate mogul, Roy, in his late 50s, sustained fatal injuries from his licensed firearm at his office near Richmond Circle. After the gunshot was heard, employees rushed to assist, but he was found in critical condition and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

According to I-T sources, investigations at Roy’s premises commenced approximately two months ago.

Roy’s brother has alleged that these pressures from the central agency may have led to his desperate act.

Originally from Kerala, Roy’s situation raises significant concerns within the industry.
