Hyderabad Old City corridor impacts 900 properties

HYDERABAD: The road widening initiative for the proposed Metro Rail corridor between MGBS and Chandrayangutta in Hyderabad’s Old City is progressing rapidly. HAML Managing Director Shri NVS Reddy emphasized that the alignment has been meticulously planned to optimize space while minimizing property impact.

“Our initial estimate indicated that about 1,100 properties would be affected. Thanks to engineering redesigns and realignments, we’ve reduced that figure to approximately 900,” Reddy explained.

He also addressed the numerous challenges encountered in the land acquisition and demolition phases. “Given the densely populated urban environment, houses are tightly packed, and the presence of overhead electricity cables and utility lines complicates matters further. We’re proceeding carefully, mainly at night, to lessen public inconvenience,” he noted. A comprehensive action plan is in place to expedite property acquisition and demolitions.

On the construction side, groundwork for beginning metro works is in progress. Locations for future metro pillars have been marked, and foundation work has started.

To facilitate the establishment of metro stations and pillars, a geotechnical firm has been contracted to conduct soil bearing capacity assessments, which are set to commence shortly. A DGPS survey has already been completed to finalize locations without disrupting any historical or sensitive structures. Temporary Benchmark (TBM) sites have been established to assist during the construction survey phase.
