HC Orders Jaipur Civic Body to Seal Illegal Buildings

JAIPUR: The High Court has taken a strong stance against commercial activities in the residential areas of Jaipur’s walled city. On Friday, a division bench instructed the state government and the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (Heritage) to seal the remaining buildings among 19 illegal structures identified on Haldiyon Ka Raasta. The court emphasized that compliance with this order falls under the responsibility of the JMC-H commissioner.

The division bench, comprising Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Sanjeet Purohit, issued this directive in a suo motu case concerning commercial encroachments in residential zones. They have scheduled the next hearing for October 8, requesting the state government to report on the actions taken to adhere to the order.

Amicus Curiae Shobhit Tiwari noted that the court had previously ordered the sealing of all 19 buildings in February 2025; these structures are registered as residential but currently host commercial activities. Yet, only five buildings have been sealed by the municipal corporation thus far.

“No discrimination should be tolerated in the enforcement of this order,” stated the court.

Following deliberations, the court mandated the authorities to seal the remaining buildings and report back on the developments during the hearing set for October 8.
