Gurugram to Launch Sealing Drive Against Tax Defaulters

GURUGRAM: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has identified 65 property owners who owe more than Rs 1 crore each. Starting Tuesday, the MCG will initiate a sealing drive targeting these defaulters.

Officials have indicated that the majority of the properties involved are commercial establishments and industrial units. This action is part of MCG’s continuous efforts to recover overdue property tax payments and enhance its revenue base.

“We will commence the sealing drive on Tuesday, focusing on the 65 properties identified with outstanding property tax dues. Notices have been dispatched to the respective property owners,” stated an MCG official familiar with the situation.

Property tax represents a significant revenue source for MCG, alongside stamp duty, making it one of the highest revenue-generating municipal corporations in Haryana.

For the current financial year (FY), the property tax revenue target is set at Rs 275 crore, which is lower than the previous year’s target of Rs 300 crore. To date, MCG has accrued Rs 200 crore by August, equaling approximately 72% of its target for the ongoing FY.

Property tax rates vary by plot size: Rs 1 per sq yard for plots up to 300 sq yards; Rs 4 per sq yard for plots between 301 and 500 sq yards; Rs 6 per sq yard for plots from 501 to 1,000 sq yards; Rs 7 per sq yard for plots ranging from 1,001 sq yards to two acres; and Rs 10 per sq yard for properties exceeding two acres.

As reported by TOI on August 6, the civic body has begun utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance property tax revenue. AI is helping identify residents with outstanding dues, address their queries, and facilitate the payment process.
