GUNTUR: In an effort to achieve 100% tax compliance, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) is set to disconnect drinking water taps and drainage services for both residential and commercial properties.
Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu has instructed officials to cut civic amenities for those who have long-standing dues for property tax, vacant land tax, metered water charges, and tap fees.
Furthermore, he plans to hold all senior officials, including deputy commissioners, accountable for revenue generation. He expressed frustration over the ‘zero percent’ daily collection performance from several ward secretariats, especially now that the financial year is well underway.
He emphasized that continued inaction is intolerable and directed additional commissioner Challa Obulesu to issue show-cause notices to administrative secretaries who have failed to meet even basic targets. “If no improvement is observed during next week’s review, those at fault will face suspension,” he cautioned.
With arrears amounting to several crores jeopardizing essential civic services, a strict recovery plan is being implemented. “Final demand notices will be issued immediately, leading to the disconnection of water and drainage services for non-compliance, along with red notices for high-value defaulters which could result in property attachments and auctions,” Srinivasulu told TOI. He also stated that deputy commissioners must personally engage with major defaulters and ensure daily targets are met in their respective wards.
