AHMEDABAD: Gujarat is planning to establish five satellite towns with metro-like amenities and enhanced economic potential to alleviate pressure on major urban centers by 2030, officials announced on Friday.

As per a government statement, the proposed satellite towns include Sanand near Ahmedabad, Savli (Vadodara), Kalol (Gandhinagar), Bardoli (Surat), and Hirasar (Rajkot).

“The state government is currently seeking urban planners to create master plans for these towns and is in the process of appointing planners through a tender process. By 2030, we aim to equip these towns with metro-like facilities and enhance their economic capabilities, thereby reducing the strain on larger cities,” the statement read.

A satellite town is defined as a community situated near a major city, typically within an hour’s reach, which is expected to generate new job opportunities and offer top-notch infrastructure and citizen-focused amenities.

The statement also highlighted that these towns will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, well-planned public transport systems including electric bus services, advanced water supply and waste management solutions, ring roads, urban parks, scenic lakes, model fire stations, and mixed-use developments comprising offices, residences, and shops.

“To achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 and promote comprehensive development in every state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed the strategic growth of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Following this vision, the Government of Gujarat, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has committed to developing five towns in Gujarat as ‘satellite towns’,” it noted.
