MUMBAI: The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) have been designated as the special planning authority for the 42.51-acre Jamasp Salt Pan land located in Mulund East.

According to a notification released on October 27 by the state urban development department, the SRA has been assigned this authority over the Dharavi area and the adjacent railway land included in the rehabilitation initiative. Additionally, it has authority over the 8.5-hectare Kurla Dairy site.

The Mulund salt pan is part of the 256 acres the Centre has approved to be transferred for the Dharavi redevelopment project, aimed at creating rental housing for residents in Dharavi who do not qualify for free housing.

The DRP and SRA are components of Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL), a special purpose vehicle established for carrying out the rehabilitation project.

NMDPL has disbursed Rs 320 crore to the Salt Commissioner for the Jamasp salt pan land, and the DRP and SRA took physical possession of the land in April.

Officials stated that, given their oversight of the rehabilitation project, it makes sense for the DRP and SRA to be the planning authority for all associated lands.

There is strong resistance from Mulund residents regarding the relocation of Dharavi residents to their area. Kurla residents have also expressed opposition to the relocation on the Kurla Dairy site.
