Delhi’s Suniyo property tax scheme raises ₹304 crore in 3 months

NEW DELHI: In just three months, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) Suniyo property tax amnesty scheme has garnered ₹304 crore—over three and a half times the revenue generated from the previous scheme.

The Suniyo (Sampatti Kar Niptan Yojana), which will conclude on September 30, has seen a greater number of taxpayers. Data indicates that 102,142 individuals have utilized the Suniyo scheme thus far, compared to 38,805 participants from the Samriddhi scheme initiated in 2022-2023.

The Suniyo scheme has outperformed the earlier Samriddhi scheme, which raised only ₹84.23 crore during the same period last year, as noted by an MCD senior official.

This increase reflects over 63,000 additional taxpayers and a 163.22% rise in participation. In June 2025, the initial month of the Suniyo scheme, collections totaled ₹96.28 crore—₹35.30 crore from residential taxpayers and ₹60.98 crore from commercial taxpayers. In July, collections increased to ₹150.57 crore, while August saw ₹58 crore collected.

Zone-wise analysis from the MCD’s dashboard further highlights the performance metrics.

The Narela zone topped the collection charts with ₹44.8 crore, followed by Karol Bagh (₹28.69 crore), the MCD headquarters zone (₹25.78 crore), South zone (₹24.78 crore), and City SP zone (₹24.36 crore). Other significant contributions came from Keshavpuram, Shahdara (South), Shahdara (North), West, and Central zones, each surpassing ₹20 crore.

The Rohini zone generated ₹16.27 crore, while Civil Lines contributed ₹13.68 crore, and Najafgarh recorded ₹12.97 crore, the latter having the least taxpayer count but still notable revenue.

In terms of taxpayer numbers, the West zone led with 12,623 properties fulfilling their tax obligations, closely followed by Shahdara (South) with 12,321 and City SP with 10,990. Rohini, Keshavpuram, Shahdara (North), and Karol Bagh also experienced strong uptake, while zones like Central, South, and Civil Lines reported lower figures.

MCD officials attribute the success of the Suniyo scheme to enhanced public awareness, citizen outreach initiatives, and the convenience of digital payment methods, which have notably diminished issues related to cheque bounce.

The civic body believes this scheme has not only increased revenue but has also expanded the taxpayer base by incorporating more property owners.
