NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has removed the restrictions on power connections for properties booked by the MCD due to various violations. This decision will benefit approximately 1.25 lakh families in Delhi, officials announced on Monday.
The Delhi government has issued an order to provide power connections to these properties, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
Gupta highlighted that this decision is in the public interest, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring citizens’ rights and access to essential services under any circumstance.
The power department has received numerous complaints about discoms (power companies) denying or disconnecting electricity connections for properties booked by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for unauthorized construction.
In several instances, years have passed since demolition orders were issued by the MCD without any action, leaving residents without power connections.
The Chief Minister confirmed that properties booked by the MCD for unauthorized construction will now be eligible for electricity connections, as stated by the CMO.
Many residents have lived in these buildings for years, facing inconvenience and increased electricity theft due to their ‘booked property’ status, Gupta added.
Under the new order, discoms cannot deny electricity connections solely on the basis of a property being booked for unauthorized construction. A connection can only be denied if the MCD formally notifies that the property is under demolition or sealing actions.
Gupta emphasized that this decision will aid over 1.25 lakh families in obtaining electricity connections they have long awaited. Additionally, discoms will establish help lines for citizens who were previously unable to secure regular electricity connections.
