CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has successfully removed 2 lakh tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste over the last six months across all 15 city zones. The cleanup operation commenced on January 7, initially focusing on seven zones before expanding to all after resolving a legal issue. Supported by Premier Precision Surface, the effort now utilizes 168 vehicles, including earthmovers, tipper lorries, and compact trucks, averaging about 1,000 tonnes of waste clearance per day.
Officials stated that the waste is sent to recycling centers located at Kodungaiyur and Perungudi, where it is sorted and repurposed into paver blocks for pedestrian plaza construction on Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Nungambakkam and MC Road in Royapuram. Additionally, the GCC has developed an app to help identify waste locations, obtain approvals, and upload photos after the waste is removed.
New regulations for C&D waste disposal came into effect on April 21. Residents are encouraged to adhere to these guidelines, supported by awareness campaigns and training sessions. Since January, fines amounting to ₹39.3 lakh have been imposed on offenders.
This operation has successfully cleared debris from roads, residential areas, and commercial zones, significantly enhancing safety and hygiene. Detailed guidelines can be accessed on the GCC website or by calling their helpline at 1913.
The highest contributors to waste removal include Teynampet (20,589.15 tonnes), Adyar (20,199.21 tonnes), and Anna Nagar (18,114.32 tonnes).
