CHENNAI: In response to the increasing workforce in lower-income neighborhoods, the CMDA plans to establish a co-working space for the Chief Minister on Wall Tax Road in George Town.
The CMDA has issued tenders for the construction of a three-storey building that will provide at least 150 workstations across its first two floors. The third floor will feature a canteen and designated dining area.
As per the tender details, the ground floor will include a lobby spanning 770 square feet. The first floor will accommodate a work terminal for 75 users within a 1,334-square-foot area, alongside a special lobby for waiting staff, occupying 495 square feet.
The second floor will replicate the first, also fitting in a 75-seat work terminal in a 1,200-square-foot hall, complete with two restrooms and a coffee station on each floor.
The CMDA intends to equip each floor with three internet-connected computers, ensuring free access to journals and digital magazines. Additionally, the space will provide resources for competitive exam preparation.
Rajesh Jain, the Councillor from the Sowcarpet area, remarked on the high number of economically disadvantaged individuals in and around George Town, particularly Wall Tax Road and Elephant Gate, who are entering the workforce.
“Even people living on the streets are finding jobs that require computer skills. This initiative will not only aid them but also enhance the community,” he stated. The local corporation will also set up a 20-slot bike parking area along the road.
He mentioned ongoing development of a resettlement colony nearby, where several encroachments, including those along the Buckingham Canal, will soon be relocated. “We anticipate opening by December,” he added.
