CHANDIGARH: As construction and demolition (C&D) waste continues to rise in the city, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) plans to create 17 new designated sites for waste disposal across various wards.
Currently, the MC oversees around 20 designated sites, but officials assert that these are insufficient due to escalating construction activities, necessitating more collection points.
The MC’s Building and Road (B&R) wing is actively identifying feasible locations for the new sites. Once selected, the proposals will be submitted to the urban planning department for necessary approvals, particularly related to land allocation.
A recent letter to MC executive engineering officers states: “According to the contract, the hired agency must construct 17 additional C&D waste collection points within the jurisdiction of your offices. The agency has reported that 40% of the work is completed, yet progress has stalled due to lack of access to the allocated sites.”
Emphasizing the urgency, the letter further urges officers to expedite site allocations for the construction of the C&D waste collection points. It also requests a status update on completed work, as higher authorities are seeking this information.
Sources within the MC indicate that Chandigarh has 35 wards, and the goal is to establish at least one C&D waste collection site in each ward. This initiative aims to facilitate responsible disposal of construction debris, thereby reducing illegal dumping and its associated environmental risks. The MC has already contracted an agency via a tender process to construct these sites, providing clear guidelines for the project.
Officials believe that expanding the waste collection network will enhance waste management efforts and support the city’s cleanliness initiatives.
