Chandigarh Civic Body Collects ₹61 Crore in Property Tax Rebate

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh municipal corporation has achieved a record collection of ₹61 crore in property tax during the two-month rebate period from April to May, marking the highest amount collected in this timeframe. The rebate scheme concluded on May 31.

Taxpayers who failed to meet the deadline will incur a 25% penalty in addition to 12% interest on the outstanding amount.

Out of the total collection, ₹37.21 crore originated from commercial properties, while residential units contributed ₹23.79 crore, according to municipal records. This represents an increase from the previous year’s collection of ₹59.94 crore in the same period.

Of approximately 150,000 property taxpayers in the city, 74,142 settled their dues during the rebate window, an increase from 65,491 from last year. This taxpayer base consists of around 30,000 commercial properties and about 120,000 residential units. “Although fewer in number, commercial properties contribute a larger share of tax due to their categorization based on commercial valuation,” sources indicated.

During the rebate period, residential property owners received a 20% discount, whereas commercial property owners benefited from a 10% concession.

The city has set a target of ₹90 crore for property tax collection in the 2026-27 financial year, and the ₹61 crore collected in the initial two months is a considerable boost to municipal revenues.

Action Plan for Defaulters

The tax branch of the municipal corporation will now gather data on defaulters and start sending notices in the upcoming months. Officials stated that defaulters will have the chance to clear their dues; otherwise, strict measures could be enforced, including the sealing of properties, which applies exclusively to commercial properties.
