GURUGRAM: A CEO of a real estate firm has been arrested for allegedly swindling several lawyers out of Rs 6 crore under the guise of investing their money in a high-return project, according to police reports on Sunday.
The accused, Puneet Beriwala (62), CEO of Vipul Limited and a resident of Gurugram’s Sector 42, was detained on Friday. A local court has since placed him in police custody for two days.
In a complaint lodged on October 1 last year, a group of lawyers claimed they invested Rs 6 crore in Vipul Limited in 2024, lured by Beriwala’s promise of substantial returns.
However, after they transferred the funds, he ceased communication. The lawyers reported that despite multiple requests for the money’s return, Beriwala did not comply, as stated in the complaint.
In August of the previous year, the complainants protested outside V Club, demanding punitive measures against Beriwala.
Following the complaint, an FIR was filed at Shivaji Nagar police station against Beriwala and his associates, Sunil Bhandari and Praveen Gupta. The case has been handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW-2) for investigation.
Upon his arrest, Beriwala disclosed to police that he had invested the lawyers’ funds into other projects.
“We are currently interrogating the accused during his police remand and conducting raids to apprehend his associates,” stated a spokesperson for Gurugram Police.
