NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned the construction of an additional 141,000 houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0, bringing the total of approved housing units under this scheme to over 1 million.
According to a statement, this decision was made during a meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Srinivas Katikithala, on Wednesday.
The new approvals span 14 states and Union Territories, including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Haryana, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs emphasized the need for states and Union Territories to enhance house occupancy while ensuring that infrastructure and connectivity are well-established.
“Projects should be finalized in locations with adequate infrastructure, roads, public transit, and connectivity to facilitate a better living experience for beneficiaries,” stated Katikithala during the meeting.
The committee also evaluated the progress of PMAY-Urban 2.0, discussing strategies to improve implementation and ensure timely house completion.
The ministry asserted that PMAY-Urban 2.0 aims to provide dignified living conditions to eligible urban beneficiaries, promoting inclusivity and helping the urban poor and vulnerable communities access affordable pucca houses, thereby elevating their living standards.
The scheme also champions women’s empowerment by allowing house ownership to be registered in the name of the female head of the household or as joint ownership.
