NEW DELHI: On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet approved a 3.33-km extension of the existing North-South corridor of the Gujarat Metro from GIFT City to Shahpur.
The government stated that the project, which is set to be completed in four years, will feature three elevated stations.
The decision was made during the Union Cabinet’s first meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Seva Teerth, the new PMO complex.
The estimated cost for the project is Rs 1,067.35 crore. This corridor is expected to serve around 23,702 passengers by 2029 and approximately 58,059 passengers by 2041, according to the statement.
This extension aims to enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, benefiting major multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial centers along the route.
It will also aid daily commuters traveling between Ahmedabad and the GIFT area, addressing their travel needs related to business, employment, and education. This is expected to significantly improve network integration and passenger convenience.
Approximately 1,000 construction jobs are anticipated, with an additional 250 positions in operations and maintenance post-construction.
“This project will create numerous direct employment opportunities, along with further indirect jobs through associated activities. It will be executed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat,” the statement added.
Currently, the Gujarat Metro’s Phase-I spans 68.28 km, covering the North-South Corridor from APMC to Motera Stadium and the East-West Corridor from Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam.
