Cabinet Approves ₹13,000 Cr Jaipur Metro Phase-II Project

NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the Phase-2 of the Jaipur Metro Project, which will feature a 41-km corridor with 36 stations, at an estimated cost exceeding Rs 13,000 crore, according to Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The project will be executed by the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan.

The Cabinet, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also greenlit the North-South corridor from Prahladpura to Todi Mod with a total project cost of Rs 13,037.66 crore, Vaishnaw stated during a media briefing.

The Phase-2 corridor aims to enhance connectivity to significant hubs such as the Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. An official statement noted that it will include underground stations near the airport and will integrate with the operational Phase-1 through planned interchanges and feeder systems, creating a seamless metro network across the city.

In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi highlighted that this Cabinet decision will improve connectivity, alleviate congestion, and promote ‘Ease of Living’ in Jaipur.

“Jaipur is poised for a considerable infrastructural upgrade! The Cabinet’s approval for Jaipur Metro Phase-2 marks a key milestone towards sustainable urban development,” he remarked.

The ongoing Jaipur Metro Phase-1 currently accommodates around 60,000 passengers daily on its critical 11.64-km corridor. The introduction of Phase-2 is anticipated to significantly boost ridership, thereby increasing public transport use in Jaipur and decreasing reliance on private vehicles.

Phase-2 of the Jaipur Metro has undergone thorough evaluations at several levels, including inter-ministerial discussions, reviews by the network planning group, and assessments by the Public Investment Board (PIB).

The project exhibits an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) greater than the required threshold (>14%), signifying robust socio-economic viability. Funding will be sourced through equity contributions from both the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, along with subordinate debt and multilateral financing, consistent with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.

This initiative aligns with the Rajasthan Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Policy, 2025, proposed reforms for a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA), and national sustainable urban transport objectives.

Expected to be completed by September 2031, Jaipur Metro Phase-2 will notably alleviate traffic congestion, minimize vehicular emissions, and improve mobility for residents, workers, and tourists, further positioning Jaipur as a modern, future-ready city, contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Rajasthan.

The Union government noted that Jaipur has an operational Metro system through Phase-1, which traverses the East-West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, covering 11.64 km and linking key residential and commercial zones with the city’s central business district, the Heritage Walled City.

Phase-2 of the Jaipur Metro, set along the North-South axis, will enhance the existing corridor, ensuring comprehensive metro connectivity across Jaipur, thus easing traffic and enhancing urban mobility.
