Bengaluru PGs Face LPG Shortage, Tenants Opt for Work-from-Home

BENGALURU: A shortage of commercial LPG is impacting paying guest (PG) accommodations in the city’s eastern IT corridor, leading many residents to consider work-from-home options due to concerns about food availability. Numerous migrant professionals living in PGs report that limited meal offerings and uncertainty regarding cooking gas are making it challenging to maintain daily routines.

Areas such as Whitefield, Marathahalli, and Ashwath Nagar—which accommodate hundreds of migrant workers in tech parks—are experiencing dwindling LPG supplies, prompting PG owners to cut back on meal services.

The Whitefield PG Owners’ Welfare Association has notified residents that lunch services will be temporarily halted beginning March 13 due to the lack of gas cylinders. A PG owner in Marathahalli, who is part of the association, confirmed the ongoing crisis, stating, “Currently, we only have enough stock for the next two days. If the situation doesn’t improve, we may need to send some tenants back to their hometowns as managing food will be extremely challenging,” as reported to TOI.

Sai Kiran, a tenant in a PG in Ashwath Nagar, mentioned that residents have been warned about potential meal disruptions due to the gas shortage. “Even at work, they’re tracking who stays in PGs to offer work-from-home alternatives,” he noted.

PG operators are struggling to procure gas cylinders from distributors, with one owner noting their dealer had been unresponsive for two days. “We have only one cylinder left, and we’re now serving basic items like rice, upma, and vermicelli to conserve fuel,” the owner shared.
