Bengaluru issues final warning to 1,010 property tax defaulters

BENGALURU: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has issued a final warning to property owners who are overdue on their property taxes, with a total of Rs 33.9 crore pending from 1,010 property owners across the five city corporations.

Special Commissioner (Revenue) Munish Moudgil stated that Rs 14.3 crore is owed by 510 significant defaulters, while Rs 19.6 crore is awaiting resolution in 500 property tax reassessment cases. “Zonal joint commissioners have been directed to accelerate the recovery from major defaulters and those in reassessment. The list of the top 50 defaulters and reassessment cases for each municipal corporation is now available on the GBA website. Property owners with outstanding dues are urged to settle their taxes promptly to avoid legal consequences,” he advised.

Additionally, the GBA has ramped up property auctions to recover longstanding dues. Within the KR Pura area of Bengaluru East, two out of six targeted properties have already been auctioned. Officials mentioned that stringent measures are being enforced for properties with unpaid taxes exceeding one year, including the auction of properties to recover dues. According to the Greater Bengaluru Administration Act-2025, it is obligatory for all property owners or occupiers within municipal limits to pay property taxes annually.

The authorities noted that show-cause and demand notices were previously issued to defaulters, allowing ample time to settle dues. Property owners also received multiple reminders via SMS. Despite these efforts, six properties in the KR Pura zone proceeded to auction as stipulated by the Property Tax Assessment, Collection and Management Rules, 2024.

During the auction, four property owners settled their debts immediately, leading to their properties being withdrawn from the auction list; the remaining two properties were successfully auctioned off to the highest bidders.
