BENGALURU: If you haven’t settled your property tax dues with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), be cautious—you might lose your unit in a public auction.
In a significant move against defaulters, GBA auctioned off seven properties within the East and North City Corporation limits on Saturday to recover longstanding tax arrears.
Despite numerous notices and recovery efforts by the former BBMP and the five new corporations under GBA, many property owners still fail to make tax payments. With tax dues reaching ₹437 crore across nearly 7,000 units in the city, authorities have decided to resort to property auctions as a final measure.
Of the 25 properties listed in the East, 107 in the North, and 40 in Central, five properties in the East and two in the North were sold, while none in Central attracted bidders.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the need to address property tax arrears, highlighting that some former legislators own properties and collect rent without paying their fair share of taxes. “If they’re earning rent and not paying taxes, what action should the corporation take? Such properties will also be auctioned,” he warned.
The Times of India reported from the auction in the East City Corporation, where 25 properties—including one valued at ₹17.9 crore, the highest on the list—were up for bidding. As the bidding commenced, 19 property owners hurried to clear their dues.
Ultimately, five properties were sold, while one was withdrawn after being found to encroach upon a stormwater drain.
