Belagavi: Probe launched into 10-storey building violations

BELAGAVI: The city commissioner of Belagavi, Karthik K, has initiated an investigation into possible irregularities concerning a ten-story private building under construction in Shivaji Nagar, near the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) office.

The inquiry will focus on alleged building code violations and the issuance of property identification (PID) numbers. The project is under scrutiny for potential non-compliance with essential regulatory standards, including minimum road widths, required setbacks, floor area ratios, fire safety clearances, structural stability certifications, environmental approvals, and parking requirements.

The controversy has escalated amid claims that construction began without securing the necessary approvals. The perceived inaction from the revenue, town planning, and engineering departments within the BCC has raised concerns about administrative accountability and oversight.

Additional worries have emerged regarding claims that PID numbers were issued without completion certificates, which could legitimise unauthorized constructions. A civil engineer, wishing to remain anonymous, noted that high-rise building approvals involve extensive scrutiny beyond local authorities and that non-compliance with regulations is not uncommon in Belagavi.

The commissioner has stated that appropriate measures will be taken based on the investigation’s findings.
