Andhra CM: Speed Up Welfare Housing for Poorer Sections

AMARAVATI: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced on Wednesday plans to expedite welfare housing initiatives for economically disadvantaged groups. His target is to complete 10 lakh houses by March 2026.

Naidu envisions that three lakh houses should have their housewarming ceremonies next month, while two lakh additional homes should be allocated to beneficiaries by the Sankranti festival.

“Every poor family in the state should have their own home. The welfare housing initiatives must be realized swiftly. We aim to reach one million houses by March 2026,” Naidu stated in a press release.

In a review of the housing projects, he directed officials to categorize them into A, B, and C for better management and to compile a list of homeless families within two weeks. Authorities are to identify land allocations for beneficiaries—three cents in rural areas and two cents in urban locations.

The state has earmarked over Rs 2,013 crore for housing initiatives this year, as highlighted in the release.

Infrastructure enhancements in 4,305 layouts, where more than 50% of the housing is complete, will need an extra Rs 3,296 crore for roads, drainage, and other facilities.

In the Kuppam constituency, Rs 16 crore has been distributed to 4,647 beneficiaries, with Rs 919 crore soon to be allocated to nearly three lakh beneficiaries across the state.

A total of over 18 lakh houses have been approved under central schemes like PMAY-Urban, PMAY-Gramin, and PM Janman, with 9.5 lakh completed, including nearly three lakh this year, and an additional 19,000 expected next month.

Other allocations include Rs 100 crore for 15,753 houses under PM Janman and Rs 75 crore for 15,582 houses under PMAY-Gramin.

PMAY-Urban, managed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, seeks to alleviate urban housing shortages for EWS, LIG, and MIG groups, including slum residents, ensuring eligible urban households have homes by 2022.

To bridge gaps in past rural housing initiatives and fulfill the government’s “Housing for All by 2022” commitment, the Indira Awaas Yojana has been revitalized as the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).

PM Janman aims to offer essential amenities such as secure housing, clean drinking water, and enhanced access to education, health, nutrition, road and telecom connectivity, electrification of unpowered households, and sustainable livelihood prospects.
