Aadhaar Authentication Required for Property Registrations in Belagavi

BELAGAVI: District Commissioner Mohammad Roshan has mandated that all sub-registrars in the district must authenticate Aadhaar for all parties involved in property registration.

This directive comes in response to a recent report by the Times of India, which uncovered a significant racket involving the creation and illicit use of duplicate Aadhaar numbers for property transactions through sub-registrar offices.

In a related incident at the Udyambag police station, eight individuals were accused of impersonating legitimate property owners by using fake Aadhaar numbers to fraudulently transfer ancestral property from a family. This has sparked considerable public concern regarding the extent of the fake Aadhaar racket in the district.

In his public statement released on Thursday, Roshan emphasized that Aadhaar authentication is crucial to prevent impersonation fraud in property transactions, protect both public and government properties, maintain order, and address criminal activities in Belagavi district.

Responding to the issue, district minister Satish Jarkiholi has ordered the formation of a joint task force, comprising senior police officers and revenue department officials, to investigate the reported extensive creation and use of duplicate Aadhaar numbers in the district.

Officials noted that fake Aadhaar numbers, often having one person’s photograph but another’s name, present a serious threat. They have raised alarms over identity documents being misused to alter age records, particularly in cases of child marriage.

As Aadhaar is linked to numerous government and private services, including banking, the growing misuse of Aadhaar numbers has become a significant public concern.
