Gurugram’s tax drive raises ₹30 crore in just 45 days

GURUGRAM: As the end of the financial year approaches, the MCG has ramped up its efforts to recover property taxes, collecting Rs 30 crore in the last six weeks, which represents about 10% of the total property tax revenue goal for the current fiscal year.

In this initiative, the civic authority sealed off 55 properties due to non-payment and issued 410 notices to defaulters, as reported by taxation officials. The MCG aimed to collect Rs 275 crore in property tax for the financial year and has already surpassed this target, amassing Rs 295 crore.

Officials indicated that the focus is now on identifying commercial activities taking place in residential areas, especially unauthorized paying guest (PG) accommodations and guesthouses, in order to incorporate them into the commercial property tax framework.

The civic body has requested data from real estate websites such as Housing.com and Magicbricks, as well as from online accommodation platforms like SaltStayz and Houzer, along with information about unauthorized PG advertisements flagged by the advertisement branch of the corporation.

The data collected will be compared against existing property tax records to identify discrepancies and prevent revenue loss, as the corporation seeks to enhance enforcement before the new financial year. “Revenue collection is crucial for advancing the city’s development projects, essential services, and civic amenities, and we will continue to take stringent actions in this regard,” stated Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya.

Officials recently held a review meeting with zonal taxation officers and directed them to concentrate on boosting tax collection efforts.
