Lucknow to Adopt New House Tax Assessment System

LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Municipal Corporation is introducing the Property Tax Management System (PTMS) to enhance transparency in property tax assessments. This initiative aims to eliminate inconsistencies in tax calculations and mitigate complaints regarding municipal staff harassment.

Properties that may be impacted include those with discrepancies between recorded and actual built-up areas, buildings misclassified as residential or commercial, and properties that expanded without proper updates. Additionally, high-value homes and buildings currently outside the tax system will be scrutinized more closely.

Currently, inaccuracies in assessments have resulted in small buildings being attributed inflated areas or residential properties being taxed under commercial rates. The PTMS will establish a digital, property-specific database, enabling authorities to compare actual and assessed taxes, helping identify instances of under-assessment and non-payment.

Ashok Singh, the chief tax assessment officer for LMC, explained the system’s benefits: “PTMS will promote transparency by digitally mapping each building and correlating verified data on area, usage, and ownership. Once uploaded, this information cannot be manually altered. Both property owners and senior officials will have visibility into tax calculations, fostering accountability across the board.”

The system will also facilitate the identification of tax defaulters, with property tax data available for continuous monitoring by the municipal commissioner and senior officials.
