NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has intensified efforts to establish its fifth construction-and-demolition waste processing facility in Tehkhand. The selected agency is set to take control of the seven-acre site on January 1.

A corporation official mentioned, “After that, it will take about a year for the agency to complete the setup and become fully operational, pending all necessary permissions.”

The initiative will encompass the collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of waste from the corporation’s central and southern zones. Initially, the concessionaire will handle up to 1,000 tonnes of waste daily, with plans to increase this to 2,000 tonnes within two years.

This facility will feature a compact, fully computerized setup, including an integrated processing unit equipped with a log washer for both coarse and fine aggregates. The end products will meet specified standards.

Moreover, the project will involve acquiring a sufficient number of GPS-enabled vehicles for waste transportation, conducting hydrological and flood-risk assessments, performing soil investigations in accordance with legal requirements, and installing a digital weighbridge monitored by CCTV.

Currently, four construction-and-demolition waste processing plants operate in the city: Bakkarwala (1,000 tonnes/day), Burari (1,500–2,000 tonnes/day), Ranikhera (1,000 tonnes/day), and Shastri Park (1,000 tonnes/day).

“Once all five facilities are operational, the corporation expects to process between 5,500 and 6,000 tonnes of waste daily,” the official added.

The civic agency has 125 secondary waste collection points that channel construction and demolition waste to processing facilities. To reduce dust pollution and optimize waste disposal, it plans to establish debris disposal sites in each of its 250 wards.

Between April 1 and November 30 of this year, 440,000 metric tonnes of processed material from the four plants were sold in the private market, while 85,000 metric tonnes were acquired by government agencies. By 2026, the total amount is projected to reach 1.2 million metric tonnes, with 1 million metric tonnes intended for private use and the remainder for government agencies.
