Ghaziabad Extends Property Tax Rebate Deadline to December 31

GHAZIABAD: The municipal corporation has extended the deadline for the property tax rebate to December 31st from October 31st. Consumers can now benefit from a 20% rebate on property tax until this new deadline.

After December, the rebate will decrease by 10%, available for another month. In January and February 2026, a 5% rebate will apply. Following this period, no rebates will be provided, and those paying property tax after March 2026 will incur fines for defaults. This marks the second extension of the deadline by the GMC amidst an ongoing court case in the Allahabad High Court concerning a contested property tax increase.

Over 550,000 consumers fall within the tax bracket in the city, with the state government setting a target of Rs 600 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. The GMC aims to collect at least 80% of this target. An official reported that approximately Rs 160 crore has already been collected in the current fiscal year under property tax.

Mayor Sunita Dayal noted that the deadline extension aims to provide relief to residents who have had to cope with increased property tax this fiscal year.

The property tax hike came into effect on April 1, but the GMC board rescinded the new rates in June due to opposition from councillors. Nevertheless, the GMC continued to issue notices to consumers based on the increased rates, leading former GMC councillor Rajendra Tyagi to file a case in the Allahabad High Court against this decision.

“According to municipal regulations, the GMC can raise property tax once every two years. In FY 2023-24, the tax was increased by 10%, and it has now been raised again by three to four times. This is against the rules, which prompted me to file a case,” stated Rajendra Tyagi.
