Delhi to renovate 2,416 flats for the underprivileged

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government announced on Friday the approval for repair and renovation of 2,416 ready flats in Sawda Ghevra, instructing officials to expedite their allocation.

During the 34th board meeting of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Chief Minister Rekha Gupta mandated that all renovation work is to be completed by January 15.

“No budgetary constraints will be imposed on welfare schemes,” the CM emphasized.

The board also approved renovation initiatives for flats at various locations, including Sultanpuri, Dwarka, and Bhalswa.

This is part of the government’s initiative to repair about 50,000 unused EWS flats built over the years under different government rehabilitation programs, aimed at assisting impoverished beneficiaries residing in slums.

The board evaluated several infrastructure projects, including updates on the Atal Canteen initiative and improvements to basic amenities for economically weaker families. The meeting was attended by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, board members, and senior officials.

Gupta instructed officials to ensure that all DUSIB colonies have essential facilities—shops for daily needs, vegetable markets, community halls, Arogya Mandirs, STPs, solid waste management systems, sufficient water supply, well-maintained roads, parks, electrical lines, and sewer utilities.

The board also sanctioned the establishment of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs at 124 DUSIB locations, which the CM labeled a significant enhancement for healthcare access in slum areas.

Gupta also instructed that e-rickshaw charging stations and adequate parking should be developed in designated areas for low-income families. Comprehensive plans for ongoing and future projects will be discussed at the next board meeting.

Sood highlighted the importance of basic facilities in both new and existing flats and directed DUSIB’s CEO to adopt a holistic strategy that integrates housing, healthcare, sanitation, and livelihood amenities in future projects.
