LUDHIANA: In a bid to prevent its dissolution, the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) is focusing on the Punjab government’s land pooling scheme to advance its longstanding project aimed at creating a new residential and commercial zone in Lohara or Jaspal Bangar. The appointed consultant was recently tasked with submitting the project report.
Meanwhile, LIT Chairman Tarsem Bhinder intends to discuss this initiative with key officials in Chandigarh.
After several years without launching new projects, LIT’s only current endeavor is the construction of Atal Apartments on Pakhowal Road. Officials expressed concern that without significant projects, LIT could face a merger into the Municipal Corporation (MC).
Recently, LIT transferred responsibility for existing areas under its jurisdiction to the MC due to a lack of necessary staff and equipment, clarifying that its primary role is to develop schemes rather than maintenance.
Under the newly proposed scheme, LIT plans to create both residential and commercial spaces on the Lohara side, pending approval from the local bodies department. Following the launch of the land pooling initiative, local bodies officials advised LIT against pursuing any scheme development and suggested that the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) take over responsibilities.
LIT officials countered, arguing for the necessity of a new colony and presenting plans for a green industry-cum-residential housing project. The aim is to establish hotels, restaurants, and theaters, with residential areas located behind these facilities. In the first phase, LIT intends to acquire around 100 acres of land, with plans for further expansion in the second phase.
When contacted, LIT Chairman Bhinder stated, “I am in communication with local bodies officials and have requested their consideration of our proposal to develop a new scheme under the land pooling initiative. This will provide residents with quality living options.”
