PANCHKULA: The much-anticipated renovation of 2,072 Ashiana flats in Panchkula is finally commencing, offering hope to residents who have dealt with subpar living conditions for years.
Originally constructed by HSVP to house below-poverty-line (BPL) families, the buildings have deteriorated over time, suffering from structural damage, crumbling walls, and overgrown parks and pathways.
HSVP has allocated funding for the renovation, which the municipal corporation (MC) will supplement with external civic enhancements to rejuvenate the housing complexes.
Two major renovation projects have been approved by HSVP. The first project, estimated at Rs 1.88 crore, will refurbish 960 flats in Sector 20 and 256 flats in Abhaypur village. The second project, costing nearly Rs 1.75 crore, involves 224 flats in Pocket A and 312 flats in Pocket B of Sector 26, as well as 320 flats in Sector 28.
As part of the renovation, balconies and exterior walls will be painted in vibrant hues to improve the complexes’ aesthetics.
The MC will also initiate work to re-carpet internal roads, clean streets, and enhance parks and pathways within the housing societies. Four tenders will be issued for these civic works, with a directive for swift allotment to facilitate timely completion.
Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal confirmed this development, noting that he has long advocated for improvements in the Ashiana Flats based on feedback from residents. Goyal stated that after several meetings with officials and the approval of a proposal in the MC, the project has finally obtained the go-ahead from HSVP. This renovation is projected to significantly enhance living conditions for numerous families.
While inspecting the planned works on Saturday, Goyal instructed officials to ensure the use of high-quality materials to prevent future issues for the residents, who have requested completion of the renovations ahead of Diwali.
