VIJAYAWADA: The Union government has informed Parliament that the Andhra Pradesh government did not submit requests for housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0 for eligible impoverished families in the Amaravati Capital Region, although they did put forward housing proposals for other urban local bodies in the state.
In written responses to queries from YSRCP MPs Maddila Gurumoorthy in the Lok Sabha and Meda Raghunath Reddy in the Rajya Sabha, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs disclosed that it approved 61,084 houses under PMAY-U 2.0, allocating central funding of Rs 882.32 crore based on the proposals provided by the state government.
It was stated that during a meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee on June 17, 2026, an additional 12,370 houses were sanctioned for 107 urban local bodies in Andhra Pradesh, entailing a central aid of Rs 185.55 crore. The ministry clarified that approvals under PMAY-U 2.0 are strictly contingent on proposals forwarded by the Andhra Pradesh government, and no proposal for housing in the Amaravati Capital Region has been received from the state.
The Centre also updated the implementation of the initial PMAY-U scheme in Andhra Pradesh, noting that the scheme has been extended until September 30, 2026, exclusively to complete houses sanctioned on or before March 31, 2024, and grounded by December 31, 2025. Based on the proposals from the state, a total of 19.07 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U. Of these, construction has begun on 15.36 lakh houses, while 3.71 lakh are yet to be initiated. Thus far, 11.38 lakh houses have been completed, and 10.75 lakh have been occupied.
The ministry noted that Andhra Pradesh is eligible for a maximum of Rs 23,507.44 crore in Central assistance under PMAY-U, but has already received Rs 23,665.79 crore, resulting in an excess release of Rs 158.35 crore.
In response to the Ministry’s remarks, YSRCP MP Maddila Gurumoorthy emphasized that the Centre’s statement indicates a lack of proposals from the state government for housing in Amaravati. He urged the state government to clarify why the capital region was excluded from the proposals and to ensure that eligible beneficiaries in Amaravati are incorporated into the housing scheme.
