Bengaluru’s five corporations collect ₹2,949.56 crore in tax

BENGALURU: The East City Corporation has been recognized as the top performer in property tax collection, while the North City Corporation is at the bottom of the rankings. As of June 9, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) reported that its five city corporations collectively gathered ₹2,949.56 crore in property tax and additional revenues, which is 44.02% of their annual goal of ₹6,700 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The East City Corporation led the way with collections amounting to ₹792.51 crore, achieving 47.35% of its target of ₹1,673.46 crore. The West City Corporation made a significant recovery from being the lowest performer last year, now in second place with collections of ₹580.17 crore, reaching 45.26% of its ₹1,281.59 crore target. The Central City Corporation closely followed, collecting ₹576.43 crore, which is 45.25% of its ₹1,273.78 crore target.

South City Corporation gathered ₹542 crore, corresponding to 44.10% of its ₹1,228.85 crore target, while the North City Corporation lagged behind with ₹458.40 crore, or 36.89% of its ₹1,242.33 crore goal.

Officials attribute the strong collection figures to a 5% rebate offered to homeowners until May 31, which incentivized timely payments. Additionally, revenues have surged with the introduction of the Solid Waste Management User Fee, alongside property tax collection from the previous fiscal year.

Year-on-year, the five corporations have improved their performance by 1.21%. The East Corporation recorded the highest growth rate of 2.57%, with both Central and South Corporations seeing a 1.95% increase, while the West Corporation grew by 1.66%. Conversely, the North Corporation experienced a decline of 2.06% in collections.

Last year, the then BBMP set a record by collecting ₹2,424.93 crore in property tax by the end of May 2025. This year, collections had already reached ₹2,892.11 crore by the same time.

The overall revenue target for 2026-27 is ₹6,700 crore, which includes an expected ₹623 crore from tax arrears. However, only ₹12 crore has been collected under other revenue streams thus far.

According to GBA data, no coercive actions such as property attachments, auctions, or sealing of properties against tax defaulters were initiated during the first two months of the current financial year. The five corporations manage a total of 21.73 lakh properties.
