NAGPUR: As the monsoon approaches, numerous families residing in or around unsafe buildings are at risk. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has identified 278 dilapidated structures for the 2025-26 period, but only 67 have been demolished to date.
According to data from the civic body’s fire and emergency services department, many hazardous buildings remain, raising concerns for public safety during the rainy season.
The highest number of unsafe structures is in the Gandhibagh zone, where 137 buildings have been marked as hazardous. However, only 21 have been demolished, with 108 cases still pending action and four appeals under review, as reported by Chief Fire Officer Tushar Barahte.
In contrast, the Sataranjipura zone has been more proactive, demolishing 23 out of 30 identified unsafe structures. However, Ashi Nagar and Mangalwari zones, which have 13 and 10 unsafe buildings identified respectively, have reported no demolitions or notices issued.
The Dharampeth zone has identified 17 dangerous structures and has demolished six, with four houses vacated as a precautionary measure. Dhantoli zone has eliminated nine of its 21 unsafe buildings. In Nehru Nagar, despite 14 dilapidated structures, only two demolitions have occurred, while 11 have undergone repairs.
Officials attribute delays in action to ongoing court proceedings, property ownership disputes, and non-compliance by the property owners. Activists have raised concerns about whether the current pace of action is adequate to prevent potential building collapses and protect residents.
